Supporting your mental well-being with care and evidence-based strategies

For over 25 years, I’ve helped people make sense of life’s challenges, in their relationships, work and personal well-being through grounded, compassionate psychology, available in Camberwell and online.

I can help if you’re...

Feeling stuck, flat or disconnected from yourself or those around you

Managing work and life, but running on empty behind the scenes

Wanting to rebuild confidence and trust yourself

Navigating change, grief or relationship strain without much space to process it

Caught in cycles of doubt and wanting clarity about what’s next

Clinging to old coping strategies which don't work like they used to

Looking to feel more grounded, focused and emotionally steady again

Carrying guilt, frustration or anxiety and wishing you didn’t have to hold it alone

Doing your best, but it’s starting to feel like too much

How I can support you

I offer compassionate, evidence-based therapy for adults who want to feel more steady, supported and connected. My approach draws on proven techniques, but is always guided by your needs, pace and lived experience.

I aim to create a space where you can be real, reflect without judgement, and work through what’s getting in the way – whether that’s stress, low mood, relationships, or just feeling off track. Sessions are available in person in Camberwell or online, with or without a GP referral.

I work with people navigating:

  • Stress and burnout
  • Anxiety, worry and overthinking
  • Low mood and lack of motivation
  • Relationship concerns and communication breakdowns
  • Life changes and personal transitions
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Feeling stuck, flat or disconnected
  • Unhelpful thought patterns or coping habits

Hello, I’m John

I’m a psychologist who’s long been curious about how people manage life’s challenges, what makes problems feel overwhelming, and what helps people move forward. Throughout my life I have seen the same themes appear such as stress, self-doubt, relationship strain, burnout, and the experience of feeling stuck.

In addition to private practice I have worked in business and education, built a fitness business and supported my son in Paralympic sport. Those experiences taught me that people do best with steady, practical support and a safe, non-judgmental space to explore what’s going on for them.

I now work with people who seek greater emotional balance, clearer thinking, and healthier relationships. Using a combination of broad counselling and recovery oriented approaches I help people manage anxiety and stress, build self-confidence, recover from burnout, improve communication and relationships, and find direction and meaning.

I take a collaborative, person-centred approach, meeting you where you are and tailoring the pace and strategies to what matters most to you.

Our work together is practical and evidence-based, drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and the principles of Positive Psychology.

If you’re looking for calm, dependable support to better manage life’s demands and reconnect with what matters, I’d be glad to talk about how we might work together.

Practical psychology for real life

With over 20 years’ experience, I bring together psychology, and real-world insight to help people manage stress, strengthen relationships, rebuild confidence and reconnect with themselves. I’ve supported people at all stages of life - from professionals to those navigating personal change, and my approach is always compassionate, grounded and practical.

Therapy with me isn’t about endless digging or jargon. It’s about creating a safe space to make sense of what you’re feeling, focus on what matters, and find a clearer, steadier way forward.

FAQs

It’s completely normal to have questions before starting therapy. Here are some of the things people often ask before we begin. If something’s still unclear or you’d like to talk it through, feel free to reach out.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a chance to talk about what’s been going on and what you’d like to work toward. I’ll ask some questions to get a sense of your current situation, and we’ll discuss what support might look like. There’s no pressure to “have it all figured out” – we’ll take it at your pace however we’ll make some progress together.

Do you offer telehealth services?

Yes, absolutely. We offer flexible telehealth appointments via phone or video for clients across Australia. This is a great option if you’re located outside Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, have a busy schedule, or simply prefer the comfort of your own space. You’ll receive the same level of care and support as you would in person.

What are the fees?

A single fee of $230 for a 50 minute session (a rebate of $98.95 will apply with a valid GP referral).

I value your time and mine, and a full session fee will apply for a cancellation less than 48 hours prior.

Do I need a referral or a mental health plan?

No, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment. If you do have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, we can discuss how that will apply. But you're welcome to start therapy without one.

Is this the right fit for me if I’m not in crisis?

Absolutely. Many of the people I work with are functioning well in some areas of life but feel stuck, flat or overwhelmed in others. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support.

What kinds of issues do people usually bring to therapy?

People come in for all sorts of reasons – stress, anxiety, relationship tension, feeling stuck, or just not feeling like themselves. Some are dealing with a specific change or challenge, while others are looking to make sense of long-term patterns.
